Inside the course
Short, practical videos take you through each part of the SARS process, one step at a time.

In over 40 years of doing this work, I’ve lost count of the number of people who paid someone else to do something they could easily have understood themselves, if only someone had taken the time to explain it properly. That’s why we built this.”
The problem
You’ve moved. SARS may still think you live in South Africa.

Leaving South Africa doesn’t automatically change your tax status. Until you formally tell SARS that you’ve ceased to be a tax resident, their records will still show you as one, and that can follow you around, from how your income is taxed to how you can get your retirement benefits.
Where most people are when they find us
You’ve had a letter from SARS and aren’t sure what it means.
- You want to access a retirement annuity and have been told you need to tax emigrate first.
- You’ve recently moved and don’t know where to start.
- You pay a practitioner every year and wonder whether you could do this yourself.
- A friend or a Facebook group mentioned tax emigration and you want to understand it properly.
Most people who’ve emigrated know this is something that needs sorting out. What’s harder is knowing where to begin, what order to do things in, and whether you really need to pay a professional thousands of rand to do it for you.
Wherever you’re starting from, the approach is the same: understand the process, then work through it in order.
How it works
DIY tax emigration, with structure
Tax emigration isn’t impossible. It’s a process. The difficulty is that information online is scattered, sometimes out of date, and rarely in the order you need it. DIYTaxFlix puts it in order for you.
Understand where you stand
What tax emigration is, how SARS decides who is resident, and if your situation is straightforward enough to handle yourself.

Who built it
Designed by a practising tax accountant
The DIY Tax Emigration Course was built by Andrew Fraser, who has advised on South African tax since 1984 and now runs SAUK Tax, a UK-based practice helping South Africans with cross-border tax. Every step reflects how the process works in real practice.

DIYTaxFlix is likely a good fit if:
- You’re a South African who has emigrated, whether to the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand or North America.
- Your affairs are straightforward: a salary, a pension, limited investments.
- You’d rather understand the process than hand it over.
- You want to do things properly, without paying for more help than you need.
Professional support is the better route if:
- You have complex trusts or several companies.
- You’re currently under a SARS audit or in a dispute.
- You’d prefer someone to handle everything for you.
In those cases, SAUK Tax offers full professional support, and DIYTaxFlix learners have access at a preferential rate. If you start the course and find your situation is more involved than you expected, that option is there.
